Frequently Asked Questions

What's your deadline? Is it flexible?

The deadline for online entries for the 2006 Product of the Year is 5:00pm Pacific on October 13th, 2006. Online entry forms must be submitted and in our system by this deadline.

My product is being released after 12/1/06. Can I still enter?
No. Only products released by 12/1/06 will be considered for the 2006 awards.

What if I have questions about the entry form or submitting a product?
Contact Sandy Munio by email using our online email form

Can I enter more than one product?
Yes. There are no restrictions on the number of unique products that can be entered by a single manufacturer or software designer.

I’m not sure if my product is appropriate to enter. How do I know?
Products are a fit if they are developed, marketed and predominantly sold to small businesses in the U.S. with roughly 1-300 employees. Our winning products are those that are built from the ground up with small businesses in mind.

What does my login account allow me to do?
To submit a new product of the year entry form, you will need to create a username and password. This username and password applies only to a single manufacturer, allowing you to log back in at a later time and submit additional product entries forms for that same manufacturer without re-entering basic information about their business. Your account does not allow you to login later and alter a previous product entry.

How can I edit an entry I already submitted?
Once an entry form is submitted online, it is considered final. Your username and password only allows you to add new product entries for manufacturers that are already in our system. The system does not allow users to login and alter previous entries. If you made an error on your form and need to request a revision, please contact us.

Are you only considering hardware?
No. All hardware, packaged software and hosted services are eligible.

Can I enter a product that is currently in Beta?
You can submit a product in Beta but it must be generally available on or before December 1, 2006 for purchase by small businesses in the U.S.

Is there a cost to apply?
No. It is free to enter a product for consideration as a 2006 product of the year candidate and each entry qualifies for a free BASIC listing in our buyer's guide.

How is judging being handled?
Judging involves an evaluation of online entry forms, hands-on product test-drives, input from technical analysts and small business clients of the Small Business Technology Institute, and input from readers of Small Business Technology Magazine.

Are products that were 2005 candidates, finalists, “top 10 winners” or “products to watch” eligible for consideration in 2006?
Yes

Do you accept briefings/demos during judging?
A full version of the product must be submitted in order for an entry to be considered complete. While candidates are welcome to provide links to online demos, submit demo CDs and offer guided demos to supplement their nomination, but please keep in mind judges are not required to utilize them.

Will products be returned?
Products will not be returned. Contact us if you would like to discuss on exception.Your submission is a great way to gain significant exposure for your products among the editors, contributors and 100,000+ readers of Small Business Technology Magazine, plus the thousands of small businesses that benefit from learning about new technologies through educational training, consulting and market intelligence services from the Small Business Technology Institute (our publisher). Products will be retained for possible in-depth product reviews in future issues of Small Business Technology Magazine, and will be incorporated into the Small Business Technology Institute Labs. SBTI is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in California, and products submitted to us may qualify for a tax deduction (please consult with your tax advisor).

By entering my product(s), will they be considered for your product reviews and articles on must-have products during 2007?
Yes.

Where do I send my product(s)?
Submit one full-license product to Small Business Technology Institute. Include relevant online and hard-copy documentation, sample data sets (if applicable), any passwords and license keys that are required, and contact information for coordinating technical support and
product questions. Demo versions will not be accepted. If your product
is a hosted service, please include instructions and all information above in your online entry form.
